1. Top Bus Tours of Lofoten
Starting off with the most popular Lofoten tours, bus tours are a great way to see all the main sights of the island in a short amount of time.
If you are renting a car or already planning on driving yourself around Lofoten, you won’t necessarily need to take a bus tour unless you specifically want the guided commentary. However, if you don’t have your own wheels, I highly recommend booking an island tour regardless of whether you’re short on time or not.
These tours will take you to all the main sights around Lofoten including Henningsvær, Reine, Nusfjord, Å, countless beaches and many of the most popular photo spots in just one day. Plus, you’ll be accompanied by a local guide who can tell you stories and history about each location.
Obviously, it’s a no-brainer if you only have a couple of days to explore Lofoten, but even if you have the luxury of a longer trip, booking a bus tour is the most effective way to reach all of Lofoten’s best villages in a short amount of time.
Public transport in Lofoten is sparse (to say the least) and getting anywhere even slightly more remote in Lofoten takes time, so hitting all the major spots with one tour leaves your other travel days open for more time-consuming adventures like hiking.

2. Best Lofoten Day Tours
Starting with the most common type of tour offered in Lofoten, there are quite literally thousands of day tours in Lofoten for all types of interests. So of course I wanted to make it even more simple for you to choose and have hand-picked just a few options for each type of tour.
The most popular Lofoten day tours are photograph and hiking tours. Since these categories have so many different options, I’ve given them their own sections below. See sections #3 and #4 for all the details on those.
These tours range from a couple of hours to full-day adventures so depending on how much free time you have in your itinerary, I recommend choosing 2-3 activities from this section.
2.1 Trollfjord Boat Tours
If you only book one tour in Lofoten (assuming you’ve already seen all the spots on the bus tour), Trollfjord should be it!
With a width of just 100m (328 ft) at its narrowest point and giant walls of around 1,100m (3,608 ft) tall on either side, Trollfjord is one of the narrowest fjords in Lofoten. As it’s only accessible by boat, this pristine fjord is also home to an abundance of wildlife such as sea eagles, whales, seals, porpoises and more.
There are many different boat tours that will take you to Trollfjord and which one you pick really depends on the experience you’re looking for. I’ve picked one tour of each type for you below with a quick explanation of the best features for each option.
Sea Eagle Safari

There’s nothing like paddling along in a kayak next to 1,000m cliffs to make you feel small, plus getting up close to the traditional Rorbuer cabins of the Lofoten Islands will really make you realize your bucket list has become a reality.
Again, there are SO many different places to go kayaking in Lofoten. Almost every town in Lofoten will have at least one place to rent a kayak or take a tour. However…
One thing to know about renting kayaks in Norway is that you must have a Norwegian kayaking license called våttkort to go out on your own in a closed kayak (I’m not joking, Norway takes safety very seriously).
That’s why it’s best to book a tour. You aren’t required to have a våttkort to take a kayaking tour, plus you’ll have an experienced guide taking care of all the logistics.

2.3 Lofoten Fishing Trips
We can thank the traditional fishermen of Norway for braving the arctic conditions each year and discovering the beautiful Lofoten Islands for us.
While Lofoten has come quite far from the sleepy fishing village days, the waters here are still responsible for producing most of the country’s supply of stockfish.
If you want to try your hand at catching your own Arctic Cod (Skrei), you’ll want to visit between January and April when the fish return to the Lofoten Fjords to spawn. This is also when the bulk of the commercial fishing happens and you will see the fish racks at their fullest.
That being said, you can fish all year round in the Lofoten Islands and you’re almost guaranteed to catch your dinner. Summer fishing tours generally focus more on deep-sea fishing targeting haddock, pollock, mackerel, and coastal cod.

4. Recommended Lofoten Photography Tours
It’s undeniable that one of the reasons the Lofoten Islands are so popular today is thanks to the countless incredible pictures we’ve all seen on Instagram. So it’s fair to assume that most people want to snap a few of those iconic images themselves (I certainly did).
NOTE: While the mountains and villages of Lofoten are even more breathtaking than what you see online, don’t be fooled by the picture-perfect weather that almost always accompanies those images. The weather in Lofoten is far from picture-perfect most of the time and even in summer, you’re not guaranteed blue skies during your trip.
If your sole purpose of visiting the Lofoten Islands is for photography (or hiking for that matter), I recommend planning the longest stay possible for your itinerary. This will give you the best chance of having good conditions.
This is another reason to book a photography-specific tour.
