The Lyngen Alps are one of Norway’s most special best-kept secrets. Whether you’re coming here because you love hiking in wild mountains or surfing epic waves, you’re in for a treat.
That being said, there isn’t a huge list of Lyngen Hotels and being such a big region with so much to offer, it can be confusing deciding where to stay in the Lyngen Alps. Luckily, I explored every inch of this incredible place during my time living in Norway and am here to pass on my knowledge to make it super easy for you to choose.
In this article, I’ve included hotel options for every budget in the 4 main areas, plus keep reading to see my top recommendations for the best places to stay in Lyngen for the Northern Lights!

Lyngseidet is the best place to stay in Lyngen for most people. Compared to the other spots, this town has the most facilities, like shops and restaurants, serving as the main hub of Lyngen.
Alternatively, the Northern Lyngen Alps are perfect for those who want to spend every minute in the outdoors, as it’s closest to the best hiking and surfing. If you want access to more civilization, Svensby is another town on the west coast of Lygen that’s well connected to the entire area.
Lastly, Kåfjord is not technically part of the Lyngen Alps, however, it’s located just a short ferry ride away across the Lyngen Fjord and has more affordable prices.

1. Lyngseidet – Best Place to Stay in Lyngen Alps
This charming village is one of the top places to stay in Lyngen for most people, and you’ll soon see why! Surrounded by the Lyngen Alps and set on the shores of the Lyngenfjord, this little town offers a fair share of great hotels, restaurants and bars where you can dine and wine after a day out.
And speaking of days out, Lyngseidet is absolutely packed with fun things to do like skiing, ice-skating and hiking (lots of hikes start from here).
The main reason this town is the best place to stay for most people is that it acts as the main hub for the Lyngen Alps. Here you’ll find all sorts of facilities like stores, sports shops, equipment rentals and even some boutique clothes shops.
There are also lots of fun day tours that you can take from this town, like a guided fatbike ride around the Lyngen Alps and a guided kayaking trip in the Lyngenfjord.

Spend an unforgettable time in a unique Viking cabin that offers ski-to-door access, ski storage and a sauna to relax after all that activity. They have different bungalows to choose from, but all are equipped with a kitchen, free Wi-Fi and a terrace. The accommodation is pretty spacious, and I love the terrace with a barbecue and a seating area where you can chill while admiring the sea views. This is a super spacious house where you’ll feel right at home! Your time outdoors doesn’t have to end when you come home. I would spend every evening warming up by the outdoor fireplace. The lodge also offers a spacious garden with a terrace where you can admire the mountain views, and free private parking.
2. Northern Lyngen Alps – Where to Stay in Lyngen for Skiing & Hiking
If you’re coming to Lyngen for one thing and one thing only, and that thing is the outdoors, stay in the Northern part of Lyngen.
Home to sharp ridgelines, deep valleys and massive glaciers, this area is an absolute heaven for hikers, skiers and even surfers. Here you will find all the best hikes that Lyngen has to offer. Plus, in the winter, ski touring isn’t the only thing you can do here. Why not try your hand at ice climbing and glacier trekking?
One thing I have to warn you about is that this part of Lyngen is pretty isolated. You’ll only find small villages, most of which don’t even have a single shop. But thanks to the lack of light pollution, you can often see the Northern Lights in their full glory here.

Offering a stunning location right by the water and surrounded by mountains, this hotel is perfect for those who want to enjoy a relaxing holiday. I mean it when I say that this place has it all, from rooms with sea views, a sun terrace and an outdoor fireplace to indulgent spa facilities and an on-site restaurant.

Such a great apartment equipped with everything you’ll need! Boasting a fully-equipped kitchen with a dining area, lots of space, a living room with a flat-screen TV where you can chill after a day out and free Wi-Fi, this accommodation is definitely a great choice.

This place is set right by the water and it offers a private beach area among lots of other facilities like a sun terrace, ski-to-door access, and an outdoor fireplace. Inside, you’ll find a fully-equipped kitchen, a living room area with a TV and even a sauna.

Such a lovely house, you’ll never want to leave! It has the cutest design, a lot of space, and a nice kitchen with all the necessary amenities. There’s also a terrace where you can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, before you head out to explore.
3. Svensby (West Lyngen) – Most Central Place to Stay in Lyngenfjord
While Lyngseidet is the “hub” of Lyngen, Svensby is actually the most central location in the Lyngen Alps.
So if your goal is to explore all of the Lyngen Alps, I’d recommend staying in Svensby because, being on the west coast, it’s better connected to the mountains in Northern Lyngen without being so isolated.
The town itself is small, and the atmosphere here is quiet, but in under 30 minutes’ drive, you can easily access the shops and facilities of Lyngseidet or Breivikeidet (just across the ferry). Plus, the views are just incredible! You’ll definitely want to enjoy a day of relaxing to soak in the town’s tranquillity.
NOTE: There aren’t many Lyngen Hotels in Svensby, but your accommodation options include plenty of adorable cabins.

Looking to spend a longer time in Svensby? Then you might consider renting a house that has all the amenities you’ll need for your holiday. Like this super spacious home with 2 bedrooms and a living room with an indoor fireplace. Surrounded by mountains and boasting sea views, the accommodation also comes with a kitchen where you can cook your own meals, washing facilities and a terrace.

Such a lovely and Instagrammable place that’s perfect for 2 people! The little house has a private kitchenette, a private bathroom and a flat-screen TV. You’ll also get some pretty fab sea views and you’ll even have an outdoor fireplace for those cozy nights when you want to sit outside, watch the stars and enjoy a warm drink. There’s an on-site restaurant, and the staff can organize dog-sledding trips and snowmobile safari trips.

Here’s a super affordable accommodation that offers different cottages and chalets, each with its unique amenities, vibe and design.. Whether you’re just 2 people or a whole family, you’ll definitely find your spot here. Each cottage has a private kitchen, an en-suite bathroom and even sea and mountain views. Guests will also have ski-to-door access and a sauna where you can unwind and let your problems melt away.

This beautiful 4-bedroom house is located right on the water with stunning mountain views, making it an incredible choice for a small group getaway! Given its central yet isolated location, this house is a great base for anyone looking to explore the entirety of Lyngen Fjord whilst also having the chance to see the northern lights right in your backyard!
4. Kåfjord – Where to Stay in Lyngen on a Budget
Technically, Kåfjord is not located in the Lyngen region, but you’ll find it directly opposite Lyngseidet on the other side of Lyngen Fjord.
Olderdalen is the main town in Kåfjord, but the whole area is just as pretty as Lyngen, so regardless of which one you choose, you’re in for a treat. The main reason to stay here is that the prices are a bit cheaper than the Lyngen hotels. So if you want to save some money, then have a look at the hotels I included below.
I wouldn’t recommend staying here if you’ve already planned big hikes and long adventures in Lyngen for every day of your trip. However, just like in the Lyngen Alps, there are lots of fun activities to try here in Kåfjord itself, including skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, and even whale watching. So if you’re happy with a day or two in Lyngen and the rest around exploring Kåfjord, it’s a great balance.
Plus, you’ll definitely be able to see the Northern Lights from here as well, given the right conditions.

Relax by the fireplace in this cute cottage that comes with a small kitchen, a terrace and some gorgeous mountain views. Guests can chill by the outdoor fireplace, in the picnic area and also use the barbecue facilities. The staff can also help you with activities like fishing and skiing.

Best Places to Stay in Lyngen for the Northern Lights
Looking for a unique spot to stay in Lyngen where you can see the Northern Lights in their full glory? Then check out the stunning accommodations I included below!
You may know Tromsø as the “Northern Light capital of Norway,” but did you know that most of the Northern Light tours from Tromsø actually come here to the Lyngen Alps?
From glass window cabins to castles, you’ll find your dream place in this section. I ordered them from most to least expensive, with prices ranging from €800 to €400 per night.
Lyngen North – Spåkenes
Offering different types of accommodations from igloos with 180° or 360° of floor-to-ceiling windows to sky suites that are more like luxury suites, this hotel will make your trip an unforgettable one! Each place is special and will offer you a chance to spend your nights in bed admiring the Aurora Borealis!
The sky suites also come with a private hot tub, making them a bit more attractive, but the igloos are pretty incredible for Northern Light viewing. The accommodation also offers a restaurant and tons of activities like dog sledding.
Lyngen North is actually located just across the fjord in Kåfjord, with unbeatable views of the Lyngen Alps rising from the water.
Aurora Fjord Cabins
You will fall in love with these unique cabins that offer panoramic views through their large glass windows. They’re stylish, equipped with self-catering facilities and have a cozy vibe that will make you want to spend a lot of time inside, reading or just chilling.
You’ll also find a private jacuzzi and sauna where you can unwind after a day of exploring and trying some fun activities.
Located just north of Lyngseidet, these cabins have a great location that allows you to be isolated enough to enjoy the best of the Northern Lights while close enough to the facilities of a town.
North Experience Basecamp
This is another amazing igloo that’s a bit more affordable but that still offers some incredible views! Located in southern Lyngen, here you can spend some amazing nights admiring the Northern Lights while drinking some tea before bed!
This accommodation offers a shared bathroom, a sauna, a sun terrace and an outdoor fireplace where you can relax after a day of hiking or skiing. Not to worry, there is also an on-site restaurant that will keep your bellies full with yummy food.
Solhov, Castle of the Lyngen Alps
This is such an enchanting place! Not only is this chalet super cozy and homey, but it also has a great location by the water, just south of Lyngseidet.
Start your days with a yummy breakfast at the on-site restaurant and then head out and go mountain biking or skiing (or try many of the other activities available, like hiking and canoeing). When you return, the outdoor hot tub is the perfect place to relax at night and admire the Northern Lights.
