As the gateway to Northern Norway, Tromsø is usually a vital stop on all travelers’ itineraries. But this unique city full of museums is more than just a stopover, I can tell you for sure that it deserves a few days of your undivided attention. So instead of simply booking a hotel right next to the airport, I recommend you choose one of the cool neighborhoods that I will be talking about in this article.
Even though I’m not really a city person, Tromsø is one of the few cities that I would happily return to after living in Norway for 2 years. There’s so much to do here, and depending on what type of interests you have, the areas to choose from are quite eclectic.
So to save you a ton of time, I put together this guide with the best neighborhoods and hotels for all budgets. This way, you can easily pick the one that best suits your travel style in no time.

1. Tromsøya City Center – Best Place to Stay in Tromsø for First-Timers
There’s no better place to start your adventures in this exciting place than Tromsø City Center (especially if you’re visiting for the first time)! This is my favourite part of the city and we spend many days exploring the streets and everything there is to do here.
NOTE: Tromsøya is the name of the island of Tromsø, and you’ll find the city center on the east coast. (Check the map above). The City Center is just a 20-minute bus drive away (15 min by car) from the airport.
Tromsø’s central area is home to the harbor, countless museums, waterfront hotels and plenty of bars and restaurants where you can indulge in Norwegian cuisine. Plus, if you’re planning to go on boat tours, then staying in this neighborhood is super convenient as you can quickly reach the docks from anywhere in the downtown area.
So as you can see, you’ll find plenty of fun places to visit in this area like the Troll Museum, Polaria, the Northern Norwegian Art Museum and the Cathedral. Definitely head to Storgata street if you’re up for some shopping!
Since the City Center is pretty small, you can just walk around from attraction to attraction and see most of it. However, if you want to explore the other areas in the city, you’ll probably have to use public transport or rent a car.

2. Tromsdalen – Best Place to Stay in Tromsø on a Budget
Although Norway is not the cheapest destination, there are plenty of ways to visit the country without breaking your wallet! You can start by finding a budget-friendly area with cheap hotels in Tromsø.
In Tromso, the best area for budget travelers is Tromsdalen. Located just across the bridge from Tromsøya, it’s just a 10-minute bus drive or 30-minute walk from the City Center.
Also known as the Mainland, this area might be more affordable, but it still has its fair share of unique attractions that you should check out! Plus, the scenery is pretty incredible too.
You’ll definitely want to take some time to just explore the area before you run away to visit the City Center. Some of the main attractions here are the Arctic Cathedral, which has a really cool stained-glass facade and the Fjellheisen cable car from which you can admire the stunning city and fjords views!
TOP TIP: I highly recommend heading up the cable car, it’s one of the best things to do in Tromsø!

3. Kvaløya Island – Where to Stay in Tromsø with Kids
If you’re traveling with your family and looking for an amazing place to stay near Tromsø with plenty of nature to explore, then this gorgeous island may be for you! Thanks to its remote location, Kvaløya has a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for families who want to relax and enjoy a quiet time.
Located a 30-minute drive away from the City Center, the island is the ultimate paradise for adventurous families who want to admire Tromsø’s natural beauty (the landscapes are absolutely stunning) all day long and try all sorts of outdoor activities.Yep, you heard me right! While you’re staying on Kvaløya Island (also known as Whale Island) you can go hiking, dog sledding and skiing.
TOP TIP: While I wouldn’t recommend this area if you want to spend all your time downtown, it’s a great spot if you want to get a feel for the wilderness of Northern Norway while still being close to the comforts and attractions of Tromso’s city center. Given that the island is pretty big, you might want to have a car at your disposal so you can move around with ease.
Another big reason why lots of tourists pick Kvaløya is that it’s much better for seeing the Northern Lights than Tromsøya! This is because there is much less light pollution here. So if you’re visiting Tromso, especially for the Northern Lights (also known as the Aurora Borealis), then definitely book your hotel here. Some of the best months to see the lights are from September to March (the winter season when the nights are the longest).
P.S. You’ll most likely spot lots of reindeer around the streets of this island, so be camera-ready at all times.

4. Sommaroy – Where to Stay in Tromsø for Beach Lovers
I spotted this place from the bridge when driving from Lofoten to Tromso, and we absolutely had to take a detour! The water colour here is absolutely insane! That’s why I decided to include it on this list of where to stay near Tromsø, even though it’s around a 1-hour drive away.
Sommaroy is a stunning place perfect for those who want to relax on some of the most gorgeous beaches. Seriously, the island was even nicknamed “Tromso’s Caribbean” thanks to its white shores and blue waters. But don’t get me wrong, the water is freezing!
Literally meaning “Summer Island” this small fishing village is a local favorite during the warmer months when lots of people visit to relax on the sandy shores. If you’re looking for some cool spots, make sure to head to Reina Beach and spend your day relaxing and swimming!
It’s definitely one of the best places to stay in Tromsø for tourists who’d prefer a more local vibe. But because the area is not as touristy, there aren’t a lot of accommodations, so I’d definitely recommend booking early.
Outdoor activities are big in Sommaroy, especially hiking, since it allows you to admire the breathtaking views! In fact, Sommaroy is known for offering some stunning views of Senja Island (which I’ll talk about at the end of this post).

Unique Places to Stay in Tromso
Norway is packed with one-of-a-kind hotels that will make you fall in love with the country even more, and Tromso is no exception to that!
That’s why I wanted to offer you a short list of some unique places to stay in Tromso. Most are set outside of the central area, but they’re definitely worth the effort, especially if you want a more authentic experience.
I’ve listed the hotels from most to least expensive, and the prices are from US$600 to US$150.
Aera – Glass cabins
If you ever wanted to stay in one of the most Instagrammable places in Tromso (set around a 40 min drive from the central area), then check out this accommodation where you can admire the Northern Lights all night long from the comfort of your bed! You can pick from the different glass cabins, lodges and even igloos as each one has its special perks.
The views are insanely beautiful, and you’ll also get to indulge in some yummy traditional food at the on-site restaurant. They also have a sauna where you can unwind and relax in true Norwegian style and an outdoor fireplace that’s perfect for nights spent under the stars with a drink in your hand!
Tromso Ice Domes
Located in the remote Tamok Valley, around a 1h and 30 min drive away from central Tromso, this accommodation is pretty amazing as it offers different packages that include the overnight stay, but also some activities like a snowmobiling tour, reindeer sledding or a Northern Lights sighting.
They also offer different types of accommodations like glamping sites, chalets and cabins, each equipped with all the facilities you’ll need for your stay. Guests will get appropriate winter clothes and shoes from the staff, but definitely bring some thick layers.
TOP TIP: Even if you don’t want to stay here overnight, it’s worth visiting on a day trip from Tromsø. In the winter, there are tonnes of buildings and sculptures made of snow and ice for you to explore.
Storjord Farmstay Glamping
These domes are incredible! Not only will you get to see the Northern Lights, but you’ll even get to warm up by the fireplace in your dome! Each tent is equipped with a private bathroom, a kitchenette, and a balcony where you can chill with a cup of tea or coffee before heading out!
Spend your days here skiing (you’ll have ski-to-door access), chilling in the hot tub or by the outdoor fireplace and playing with your little ones on the children’s playground.

Hot-tubbing while admiring the sea views, watching the Northern Lights while chilling in bed and eating super yummy food, yep, that sounds pretty fabulous to me! This accommodation, that is located 1h and 30 min away from central Tromso, offers all that plus more, including airport shuttle services.
While here, you can sign up for tons of activities like bike tours, hiking, skiing and fishing, or you can also just unwind in the sauna and enjoy a more slow-paced rhythm.
Where to Stay in Tromso for Northern Lights
As I mentioned in section #2, the best time to visit Tromso if you want to see the Northern Lights is from September to March, as the nights are longer and darker during those months.
However, to increase your chances of actually seeing the Northern Lights, I’d recommend staying in a place where there’s light pollution, and preferably away from city lights, cars and all that, so definitely somewhere outside of central Tromso.
To help you with that, I made this short list of hotels in Tromso from where you can see the Aurora Borealis, which I listed from most to least expensive. The prices start from US$150 and can go as high as US$400.
North Experience Basecamp
I found the perfect place where to stay in Tromso in winter and see the Northern Lights! This amazing glass-tent offers unbeatable views of the Aurora Borealis plus a ton of awesome facilities that will make your holiday unforgettable!
Cozy up at night in bed and watch the gorgeous lights, and during the day you can enjoy some time in the sauna, warm-up by the outdoor fireplace and play in the games room! Don’t worry, there’s a restaurant on-site that serves local cuisine.
Norwegian Wild
You’ll definitely feel as if you’ve landed in some sort of fairytale when you arrive at this hotel! Especially when the night comes and the Northern Lights make their appearance! This accommodation offers different types of cottages and chalets with outdoor hot tubs and balconies.
The chalet is probably the best choice if you want to see the Northern Lights from your bed, through the big window that looks so Instagrammable. You’ll also get ski-to-door access and an outdoor fireplace.
Sommarøy Arctic Hotel Tromsø
Set in Sommarøy, around a 1h drive away from central Tromso, this gorgeous hotel offers rooms and cabins from where you can admire the stunning Northern Lights. Surrounded by the lush Norwegian wilderness and the sea, this accommodation is definitely a keeper.
While here, you’ll have access to a private beach area, a free sauna and indoor and outdoor hot tubs. Those will keep you busy during the day, while at night you can get camera ready and watch the Aurora Borealis.
BONUS: Where to Stay on Senja Island
While Senja Island is not part of Tromsø, I wanted to put it on your radar as not only is it Norway’s second biggest island, but it’s oh so pretty! Seriously, it’s like the Lofoten Islands’ wild cousin.
It’s around a 3-hour drive from Tromsø, and like most of Norway, this island is so abundant in natural beauty! Fjords, mountains, beaches, you name it, you’ll definitely find it here! If you want to take your explorations deeper, you could visit Ånderdalen National Park, which is home to super old trees and relics dating back to the Stone Age!
One super famous beach is Ersfjordstranda, which offers a stunning hilly backdrop! What can be better than chilling on the shores, facing the ocean and being surrounded by mountains? It’s the best of both worlds if you ask me. This island is also a great spot to see the famous Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights.
